How To Immigrate To Canada As An Engineer

Like we mentioned earlier, there are over a hundred immigration programs in Canada through which you can immigrate to Canada and we are going to be showing you some of the fastest, easiest and most popular ways to immigrate to Canada as an engineer so don’t stop reading. Without further ado, let’s get to what we have.

The Express Entry System

This program was initiated in 2015 by the Canadian government and since then it has been seen to be the most popular immigration program in the country. It is also the fastest and easiest as it takes only about 6months to process. Through the Express Entry System, you can apply for work and also get permanent residence in Canada.

The Express Entry System is an online program that requires you to create an online profile and fill in some information based on the requirements for the program. Some of the requirements you are required to meet are:

  • Age
  • Work experience
  • Education
  • Language proficiency
  • Adaptability
  • Proof of funds

Getting a job offer is not really a requirement for this program and so you see why it is easier to go through this pathway. You are expected to complete your online profile within 60days after which you will be placed in a draw with other applicants and every applicant will be ranked based on a Comprehensive Ranking System. Through this ranking system, the applicants will be given a CRS score based on the information you filled in your profile and the score will be matched against a CRS cut-off score and applicants who meet or exceed the CRS cut-off will be selected to receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA) for permanent residence in Canada.

There are three Federal immigration streams under the Express Entry System and they are:

  • Federal Skilled Trades Program
  • Federal Skilled Worker Program
  • Canadian Experience Class

As an engineer, you will fall under the Federal Skilled Worker Program with the Skill Type A and each engineering occupation having its National Occupation Classification (NOC) code.

What are the requirements for the Federal Skilled Worker Program?

Let’s look at the requirements you must meet to be eligible for this program under the Express Entry System.

  • You must have an education certificate of high school diploma or degree from secondary school or post-secondary school in Canada and if you have a foreign certificate, it must be equivalent to the Canadian standard and so you will have to go through the Educational Credential Assessment to check the credentials.
  • You must have a paid skilled work experience in engineering of at least one year (30hours/week) for full-time and for part-time it could be (15hours/week)
  • You must prove that you have sufficient funds to help you settle in Canada and also take care of any other family member coming with you unless you have a valid job offer
  • You must take the approved language test in English or French in writing, speaking, listening or reading and you must get a minimum score of the Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) 7 in all abilities.
  • You must successfully pass the security background check which shows that you have no criminal record
  •  You must pass the medical examination check meaning that you are in good health.

The Provincial Nominee Program

This is another popular immigration program in Canada and it is designed by the Canadian government and overseen by the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). The IRCC works with the provincial government to nominate immigrants to work and live in a particular province in Canada. The provinces do not approve your application or give permanent residence; they only nominate you for approval and permanent residence while the Canadian government approves your application.

Canada has about 13 provinces like we have said earlier and each of the province is in charge of its own nomination and they set their requirements to meet their economic needs. Through this nomination program, employers in any province can hire foreign skilled workers to come fill up job positions that couldn’t be fill locally.

You will have to check if your profession or occupation is in-demand in the province you want to live in and as we have said that engineers are highly needed in Canada.

There are 13 provinces in Canada but there are 11 Provincial Nominee Programs in Canada that you can go through to immigrate to Canada as an engineer and they are:
