How To Set Goals, Chase Them And Achieve Your Goals

PART ONE

THE IMPORTANCE OF SETTING GOALS

Setting goals is the first step in turning the invisible into the visible”                                     -Tony Robbins

For every individual whether a student, an employee or an entrepreneur; it is very important to set goals whether short term goals or long term goals. To be successful, you must develop the habit of setting goals and also achieving those goals. Some of the importance of setting goals are;

  • Goals give you direction and focus

Imagine going to the forest with a gun in hand and without an animal in mind to hunt; or you are given an arrow without a particular aim. It is obvious you will be firing your arrow at different targets or even shooting your gun at different animals without bringing down anyone. This is how living without a goal is. You just try different things and in the end, come out with a mediocre result. Goals give you a focus and a direction. You can have talents and creativity but without focus or direction, you end up achieving nothing. Coming back to the example of the arrow we used earlier, if you actually have an aim with the arrow in hand, you tend to fix your mind on the target and shoot towards that direction. That is what goals do for you in life. They help you focus and walk towards the direction of your goal.

  • Goals help you to manage time wisely and avoid procrastination

There is a difference between when you are given a task with deadline and when you are given one without a deadline. For the latter, you end up wasting and spending much time in carrying it out and in some cases, you tend to procrastinate because of laziness and also because it is not compulsory if you finish it or not. But for the former, you will focus and do everything possible to finish before the deadline.

This is what setting a goal and having self-discipline towards the goal is. Goals help you manage time wisely. Goals tend to always be in your mind and always act as reminder on what you have to do today. This push tends to remove your mind from procrastination and take away laziness.

  • Goals help you measure your success

These goals provide a clear path to success as it shows you where you are going, what changes you need to make and if you are progressing towards achieving your goal. For a student that set a goal of solving fifty (50) math exercise in a day and starts doing that but along the line getting to question 20, he loses the zeal to continue, seeing he has set a goal of solving 50 math questions every day and knowing that stopping at question 20 is not progress at all; he would be motivated to continue and put his mind to it. When you set a goal, you tend to monitor and measure your progress at achieving the set goal.

  • Goals help you determine priorities

The act of setting goals helps you to set priorities and understand the goals that are more important than others. You cannot achieve all your goals at a time. That is one reason it is advisable to break them into smaller goals and arrange them according to their relative importance so you take them one at a time and it becomes easier to achieve.

Setting goals according to priorities make you understand the goals and the importance and so you do everything you can in order to achieve your goal.

  • Goals help you to concentrate and wade off distractions

Have you ever been determined to achieve something or do something that you just put it at the top of your list and concentrate on finishing it first before every other thing? Setting goals keep you focused and in the process, you do not give way from distractions. When achieving your set goal becomes a priority, your time, effort and resources are dedicated to the goal which you want to achieve. Bill Gates had a goal in mind and this led him to quitting school so as to concentrate on his passion and goal.

The determination from achieving your goals makes you overcome every challenge you may encounter in achieving your goal.

  • Goals help you to be creative

I know you might be wondering in what way having a goal will boost your creativity. Now let us look at it from this perspective; when you have or set a goal of opening a blog and capturing a large audience, you think of ways in which you can reach your target audience and also generating relevant topics and write ups that will intrigue your target audience. In this case, you try to be creative in getting the right topic from your niche to meet the search intent of your target audience.

This is how setting a goal boosts your creativity. It is not only in that aspect, even in other areas of life. When you set goals, you develop different methods or strategies of achieving the set goals. Most people end up having plan A, B, C and D in achieving their goals. Setting goals open your mind to different ways of achieving the goals and also different ways of solving any problem you may face along the way.

  • Goals help you improve and develop yourself

A goal that has value is one that helps you develop yourself and your abilities or potentials. When you embark on achieving your goal and encounter failure, you learn from your mistakes and try to improve yourself in the process. This failure you encounter builds your character in a way; it teaches you resilience, consistency, perseverance and commitment.

The importance of setting goals cannot be overemphasized. We still have many importance of setting goals as we only highlighted a few of them. It is important to write your goals so as to pin point what we want to achieve and understand the importance of pursuing the goals.

We will be proceeding to the second part of this article where we will be discussing the steps in setting your goals.

PART TWO

HOW TO SET YOUR GOALS

“A goal properly set is halfway reached”                                                                                   – Zig Ziglar

Many people find goal setting difficult and confusing. Most times, they do not even know what they want and why they should pursue what they want or desire. The problem of not setting goals and also not the right goal is the reason most people do not achieve their goals. We will be guiding you through eight (8) steps on how to set your goals.

  • What do you really want?

Like we said earlier, why most people fail to achieve their goal is their inability to pin point what they actually want for themselves. They are busy seeing what others want for them. The moment you decide what you really want for yourself, that is the first step in achieving your goal. You have to be true and honest to yourself about what you really want. Setting a goal that is personally meaningful and based on your personal interest will direct you into achieving the set goal. So you have to determine what you really want.

  • Set your goals around what you can achieve

Anything within your reach or capability is achievable. Therefore, set your goals around what you can achieve. Let what you desire or really want be something you can actually achieve. Do not build castles in the air because you are trying to set a goal. Channel your goals to your ability and potential as this will help you chase your goals and even overcome setbacks you encounter in the process of achieving your goals. It is good to set high standard goals and think big but why think big when you know you don’t have the capacity to see it through. You just have to start from somewhere. Break down the goals into bits so you can be able to follow them one after the other and you don’t get caught up in the process.

  • Define your goal and be specific

A specific goal does not move you around in circles, what it does is to put you on a direct course of action and help you channel your energy towards achieving your set goals. So it is important to define your goal. Be précised and understand what you are about to do and its importance. It is not about trying to achieve everything; it is about achieving one thing that will add value to both yourself and the society.

  • Be realistic

What is the reality of your goal? What do you stand to gain in achieving this goal? What exactly are you going to do to achieve your goal? If you want to be realistic about your goal, these are some questions to ask yourself. You want to open a mini store that sells variety of food stuffs; you have to look at the things that you need to do in order to achieve your set goal. Highlight the mini-goals or sub-goals in achieving your main goal and also the steps or actions to take.

  • Set measurable goals

The ability for you to measure the progress of your goal, the more determined you become in achieving the set goals. Set measurable goals either by working with deadlines so as to avoid procrastination or divide your goals into smaller goals so that as you can complete them one after the other, you tend to assess how close you are to achieving your main goal. Even when your goals might seem difficult to measure, try setting a yardstick with which you can assess your progress.

  • Set priorities

Arranging your goals according to how important they are will help you achieve your goals faster and also manage your time efficiently. For an employee that has office tasks to complete, arranging your task according to their relative importance will help you concentrate better and finish the task given to you in time.

Trying to work on every area of your life at once without having a priority or focus will make you do everything and achieve nothing. So if you have many goals, it is advisable that you arrange them in a scale of preference dealing with the most pressing and relevant goal then move to the less pressing goals. This will help save your time.

  • Write your goals down

Writing your goals down and in details will help you understand the importance of achieving such goal. You should write out your goals, the processes of achieving your goals and also why you need to achieve the set goal. For every goal you set, there should be a deadline as this will help control laziness and procrastination.

After writing out your goals, you should do well to put it where you can always see it and get motivation. You can paste it on the wall of your room, door or window; somewhere you will always see it. It will help you keep in mind that you have something to achieve.

  • Identify possible roadblocks

You would be unrealistic if you say that everything will go smoothly even if you wish so. Mistakes are part of life and be sure to encounter challenges in your journey to achieving your goals. So it is better to also identify possible roadblocks and hindrances, spot them out as you are writing out your goals.

These roadblocks could be internal or external. When we say internal, we mean that the roadblocks could be as a result of your weaknesses, addictions or fear. The external roadblocks could be threats from around you; may be competition or some other disadvantages that can affect you. Also as you have identified the obstacles, still identify the possible solutions to overcoming those obstacles or roadblocks.

PART THREE

HOW TO CHASE YOUR GOALS

After setting your goals and being realistic about your strengths and weaknesses, you have to proceed to achieving the set goals. One thing is setting a goal another thing is chasing or pursuing the goal you have set for yourself. We have highlighted seven (7) tips to get you started in chasing your goals.

  • Follow the line of action you have outlined

For every goal to be achieved, you have to start working on it. You shouldn’t just set a goal, outline the actions to be taken and stop there. You have to go ahead to the implementation stage. You have to get started and follow the line of action you outlined. Work with the direction of your goal and put the steps to achieving your goals to action.

If you don’t start working on your goal, you can’t go anywhere. Nothing will happen if you do nothing.

  • Understand that you are not perfect

When we say understand that you are not perfect, we mean that even when you fail in achieving your goal or when you encounter some obstacles, admit your weaknesses and limitations but don’t accept defeat and failure. Try to improve and come out stronger and better. Because you failed doesn’t mean that your goal cannot be achieved, failure is part of the learning process as it gives you an opportunity to do better and try harder.

Nothing good comes easy so do not expect that chasing your goal is going to be a smooth sail. Understand that you have limitations, admit or acknowledge your mistake and work on getting better.

  • Seek advice from mentors

When you have a goal you want to achieve, you have to find mentor or someone that has a better experience than you and ask questions. They will have knowledge of ways that you can achieve your goals, how to overcome the obstacles you might encounter in achieving your goal or things that you should avoid in achieving your goal. Consult them on a regular basis and also listen to them carefully.

It is fine to want to achieve your goals all by yourself which is possible but consulting an experienced person will make achieving your goal easier and also faster. Let us take a teacher and a student for instance: the teachers are there to guide the students and make the learning process easier for the students.

  • Follow people with like-minds and positive people

Follow people that think like you or even better than you. Follow people that are optimistic and speak positively. They have a way of motivating you and together, you can benefit from each other. Stay connected to people that have the same goal as you. For example, if you are a copywriter, join the community of copywriters as this will help you share ideas, opinions and also experiences; you also get to learn from each other.

Chasing your goal with the right persons will increase your chances of achieving your goals. They will encourage, motivate and support you towards achieving your goals.

  • Review your goals daily

Even when you have accomplished the goals on your list, keep the list as a source of motivation to accomplish other goals. Let the list of completed goals give you a sense of accomplishment.

  • Be open to learning and correction

As the saying goes that “no one is an island of knowledge”. It is important that in your journey to achieving your goal, you should be open to learning and accept every opportunity you have to learn and be better. Learn to read books, articles and anything that will improve you.

The learning process doesn’t stop as long as human being grows. So it is important to continue learning and also take correction when you have gone wrong. Remember that you cannot be right all the time so give yourself some slack for your imperfection and take corrections as they help you get better and better.

  • Stay healthy

O yes!! This is very important in choosing your goal. You have to be able to take care of yourself even when you are on the journey of chasing your goal. Most times, some goals are so exhausting and could lead to break down. Give yourself time to rest so as to energize yourself. Most times, the task can be exhausting that you decide to skip meals, it is very important that you eat and eat healthy food as research has proven that healthy food helps to boost the brain power. • Avoid distractions

Lack of focus can make you deviate from your goal. Most people fail to achieve their goals because at some point, they got distracted and lost focus.
